I see today with the newsprint grey

I came to R.E.M. as a fan as many late 70’s kids probably did—when “Losing My Religion” was constantly playing  And I hated that song.  But my sister got the tape and I eventually got into it.  But this also means that my knowledge of the pre-_Out of Time_ catalog is pretty spotty.

It also means that those later albums mean more to me than the typical music nerd (or the typical “I listened to Murmur when it came out” nerd). I’ve actually written about R.E.M. a few of times on Hard Like Algebra.

One Week One Band is currently being written by a guy who is only looking at the albums after the drummer left, which are almost universally reviled as terrible albums. In fact, other than Up, I barely gave those albums a chance myself.  Here’s the thing though:  I always find myself defending Up as a good, and maybe great, album.  It’s the one that I irrationally fight for, the one that doesn’t make sense but I like it.

Anyway, dude nails so much stuff in his posts that I have to share them;  I haven’t finished all of them, but these were great!

On what makes Up great

An intro to the breakup story (and so other pretty cool ideas about the band)

On “At My Most Beautiful”

Off to listen to Up, now!

I can’t tell you how much I miss this stuff.  We used to drink the hell out of it and then go to play practice.
Only good bottled coffee drink EVER.
